Letters to the World at Large

I'm the sort of person who has looked forward to something exciting or busy every summer of my life since I was five; adventure beckoned at the end of every school year. Saying goodbye to friends was mixed in with buying suitcases or travel clothes and looking up hotels and restaurants abroad. I studied itineraries at the same time as math equations for finals, guide books simultaneously with English notes.

But that's all changed this summer. I graduated a week ago from high school, and suddenly I have a full stretch of a month with no plans, no expectations, no adventures mapped out. This is a change from what I'm used to, which is: overscheduling, sleep-deprivation, projects to finish, places to be, appointments to make.

This should be a welcome transition, of course; a breath of fresh air - a time to take stock. And also a time to do the things I love, like sleeping, eating, reading, writing, playing piano, spending time with my dogs - simple things - happy things. Things like spending time in the sun contemplating the clouds. Things like driving down to the beach and taking a walk on my own while watching the waves. I don't know when again in the hazy sparkling future I'll have such a perfect time for reflection.

So. While my friends are gallivanting through Europe, I can hope they will send me postcards from abroad. But I'm going to send letters from home to the world at large.

Love,
R
